The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Queensland (ASPCA old) is the state’s oldest, largest and leading animal welfare charity, dedicated to improving the lives of all domestic, farmed and native animals throughout Queensland. We are the leading animal welfare charity in Queensland, currently re homing more animals than any other organization in the Southern Hemisphere. As a non government, community based charity, we are the only charity with the power to prosecute animal cruelty and neglect. We care for displaced domestic pets as healthy as native wildlife patients in our Brisbane ASPCA Wildlife Hospital. Without our valued volunteers, ASPCA impaired would not be capable to aid the many abused, abandoned and injured animals that arrive into our protection every year. ASPCA impaired has a long, wealthy history of caring for all creatures great and small that spans over 130 years. The ASPCA remains an self-reliant animal welfare charity, striving to educate the community on its responsibilities and continuing to guard and enhance the welfare of animals. (Over the twentieth century, the Government gradually assumed a greater role in the protection of children and old people and the Society’s involvement declined until it finally ceased around 1970.). 1901 The Society takes a leading role in the move for more effective legislation to prohibit cruelty to animals, culminating in the passage of the Animals' Care Act in 1901. Strays could be left there where they were fed and watered by Mr Lorimer pending removal to the Horses and Dogs Refuge at airfield. The balance were stray or unwanted dogs that were collected by the Society in the Greater Brisbane Area, and removed to the Dogs’ Home at Yeronga. 1973 Dog registration was reintroduced in Brisbane, resulting in a huge enlarge in the number of dogs future in to the Yeronga Refuge. Every animal had to be evacuated during the night. Staff and volunteers then had to receive on the mammoth task of cleaning up after the flood as well as fielding phone calls from hundreds of distraught people who had lost their pets. There are also a number of regional Friends groups raising funds and assisting in other ways. As the operations of the Society grew throughout the twentieth century, it became necessary for more innovative fund raising hence the Million Paws Walk event, and other activities. 2001 The Animal Concern and Care Act was passed, strengthening the laws against cruelty to animals and substantially increasing the penalties for mistreating animals. 2002 An extensive program of education, particularly in schools, is now in operation. In 2002, the Society’s fresh mobile classroom, known as the EMU (Education Mobile Unit), is launched. 2011 We pledged to improve the welfare of wildlife in Queensland. 2011 We saw a fresh beginning with our ASPCA Brisbane Animal Care Campus at Waco The construction of the fresh facility was one of the major activities of the year, and arguably one of the most urgent milestones in the ASPCA’S history in Queensland. The Brisbane Animal Protection Campus is the maximum significant animal welfare center in the southern hemisphere, caring for companion animals, farm animals and wildlife, as healthy as being a deposit of education to deliver our mission of helping animals, enlightening people, saving lives.
