The role of Gordon Downs is to background cattle on highly productive forage crops and pastures prior to entry into the feedlot. With the purchases of Kynuna in 1986 and Dagworth in 1995, NAPCO has created an aggregation of some of the superior country on the headwaters of the Diamantina River. The country is a mix of Mitchell grass plains and Gidyea timber with the river running around the edge of the north and eastern boundaries. Marion Downs was purchased by NAPCO in 1934 and is the company’s largest grower property which includes its outstation Herbert Downs. The land systems vary from flood out country associated with the various river systems, Mitchell and Flanders grass downs, with the western boundary the fringe of the Simpson Desert. Monkira is dominated by the mighty flood plains of the Diamantina River, which yield highly fertile pastures of blue bush and native sorghum. The Wainui aggregation includes an irrigation and parched land farm, where grain and silage is produced for feedlot use. A 5,00 hectare dry land and irrigated farming enterprise also operates on the property.
