Why the NDIS?
Pre NDIS, disability services in Australia were at best haphazard. Funding received depended upon where you lived, as well as how, when and where you acquired your disability. Some people received adequate funding, others none.
In 2013, the NDIS was introduced to provide a fairer system of funding and support giving more control to those with disabilities.
Funding
The NDIS provides funding for employment, activities, early intervention and for accommodation.
Participants can choose when and where they receive these supports and which disability service providers they work with.
The NDIS is due to complete full rollout across Australia by 2020.
NDIS Eligibility
In areas that the scheme is operational, eligibility is determined by the following factors:
Under age 65
Australian citizen, permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen with a Protected special category visa
A permanent disability that significantly affects communication, movement and the ability to care for oneself.
Early Intervention where such intervention would substantially improve functioning, or delay or decrease a decline in functioning, for the parent and child.
