Mt Petrie Bowmen was started in 1964, with 4 original members. The club has hosted the National Championships in 2003, 2010 and 2011, 2004, the National Junior Championships in 2006 and will be hosting the 2013 National Junior Championships. Since then, several overseas teams have utilised the grounds for training, as well as archers from the Australian Institute of Sport. In 2000, the club hosted the British and Italian Olympic teams for their pre-Olympic training. Our membership is also climbing as the benefits of our facility become more widely known The club is now recognised as having facilities amongst the best in the world. Our members are climbing the National Ranking Lists and our courses have never been so popular. The hall has proven to be a great facility. The facility is 30 metres by 30 metres and was a project designed to enhance the facilities of the club by providing an all weather venue where archers could enhance their skills by practicing away from the weather and where the club could hold its Beginners, its Come and Try Courses, its RAW Courses and its Corporate Activities. Our Indoor Hall was built in 2011 with the support of the Queensland State Government through the Department of Sport and Recreation. In the late 90s extensive earthworks were undertaken to develop the Tom Hannay Range into a level, 100m x 100m area, surrounded by earthen mounds, complete with permanent clout pad. Mobile target butts were introduced to enable a common shooting line. Permanent target butts of sawn edge-on strammit were installed in the early 80s, with a staggered shooting line, and membership started to expand as a result of some Beginners' Courses being held. Tom Petrie was instrumental in getting it started on what was previously a small bore rifle range - complete with shooting mounds that were never entirely flattened until the big redevelopment of the late 90s. It remained a small club until the early 80s, shooting on fixed straw butts. (more).
