The FHA dates its formation to 1885 when a group of hotel owners formed together to represent their collective interests to Queensland's Colonial Government on matters of excise, taxation and work and immigration policies. The core objectives of the Queensland Hotels Association are to encourage the hotel and hospitality industries in Queensland, to labor towards outcomes which gain all members, and to help individual hotel businesses and groups, thereby ensuring a prosperous tomorrow for the liquor and associated industries. The FHA also provides a expansive range of services to its members including industry and compliance training, employment and industrial relations services, HHS advice and training, and assistance on business development including gaming and liquor regulations. The scope and nature of members is progressively expanding but covers the mainstream of the liquor and associated industries. The FHA represents the interest of all hoteliers in Queensland, from the large chains through to little owner operated hotels, and everyone in between. As a registered union of employers at a national and state level, the FHA rules yield for the routine election of nominated members to a State Board, which is the Association's committee of management. State Board members are elected from two electorates representing hoteliers in the North and South of the state respectively. Most hotel members are classified as members of a General Hotels Division, whilst a segregate Accommodation Hotels Division caters for accommodation hotels and resorts. This distinction recognizes the diverse representation, services, and promotional needs of the different types of hotel business. Membership subscriptions are levied annually, and aid finance the services provided to members, and also assist to fund the Association's representational and industry support activities.
